Recruits of the Government Internship Program (GIP) in the Cordillera who were under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have finally received their stipends for the second half of their 52-day stint in government operations last year.

The release of payment, which was delayed due to realignment of funds, started in the last week of December 2012 and continued in all the provinces of the Cordillera early this month.

Regional Director Leonardo Reynoso said the Department is pleased that the funds that have long been awaited has been distributed to the youth interns. He added that the release of payments had erased doubts that the stipends will no longer be released.

The NHTS-PR, a scientific and an objective targeting system, was pushed by the National Sector Support Welfare and Development Reform Project (NSS-SWDRP) in order for the Philippine government to efficiently deliver its services to the poor.

Since the system identifies who and where the poor are, prioritized beneficiaries are guaranteed to receive and enjoy their benefits from government programs.

Barangay Dangtalan is one of the remotest areas in the municipality of Pasil, a fifth-class municipality in the southwestern part of the province of Kalinga.

Most of its villages lying along mountainous terrains are preceded with paths left untouched by development.

During the dry season, dust would cover one’s feet while traveling these paths. When the rain comes, mud makes access to and from the barangay more dangerous. Two lives have already been claimed because of the rugged terrain.
